Earlier this year, Dr. Joshua Shulz delivered an address at DeSales University highlighting the work of Austrian Catholic priest, theologian, and philosopher, Ivan Illich, particularly his book, Medical Nemesis, which famously claims that “the medical establishment has become a major threat to health.” Within his address, Dr. Shulz also noted Illich’s less discussed prediction that this threat would lead to an increasing demand for euthanasia and assisted suicide, a topic that remains highly relevant in contemporary ethical discussions.
Join us for an evening lecture with Dr. Shulz at our Rochester campus as he shares this lecture entitled, "More than Conquerors: Christian Reflections on the Art of Dying" with our St. Bernard’s community. We are grateful to our co-sponsor for this event, The Finger Lakes Guild, whose work in medical ethics is profoundly important in today’s age.
Dr. Joshua Schulz is Associate Professor of Philosophy at DeSales University and the inaugural director of the Tony and Norene Salvaggio Salesian Honors Program. He has published widely in philosophical ethics, with particular focus on Catholic medical ethics, AI ethics, virtue ethics, and political philosophy. As a clinical ethicist and co-chair of the Lehigh Valley Health Network Ethics Committee, Dr. Schulz works regularly with physicians, patients, and families to navigate complex ethical dilemmas, and has led numerous workshops for clinicians on topics ranging from psychiatric and pediatric ethics to end-of-life care. He is also a fourth-year seminarian in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s formation program for the Permanent Diaconate at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
