Certificate in Catholicism and Fine Arts

Certificate in Catholicism and Fine Arts (CCFA)

"Every genuine art form in its own way is a path to the inmost reality of man and of the world. It is therefore a wholly valid approach to the realm of faith, which gives human experience its ultimate meaning." - Pope St. John Paul II, Letter to Artists, 6

This certificate program seeks to explore various art forms and their relation to and revelation of the faith. It is comprised of five courses (15 credit hours) and is available online either synchronously (in real time when the courses occur) or asynchronously (at a later time that works best for you). The required courses are:

  • C/D460 - Faith, Fiction, and Film: The Drama of Belief
  • B/C460 - A Joyful Noise: Theology and History of Sacred Music
  • B/C459 - Visual Artistry and the Christian Tradition: Iconography, Artwork, and the Challenge of the Incarnation
    • Two approved electives such as the following:
      • B/C461 - Tolkien the Artist: Creativity and the Image of God
      • B/C462 - Twentieth-Century Catholic Literary Imagination

If for some reason any of these courses are not offered in a given semester, the Certificate Program Director will be in touch with you to work on a course substitution.
