Graduate Studies:
St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry's Graduate Studies program offers courses leading to three degrees. The following degree programs are approved by the Commission on Accrediting (Association of Theological Schools) and are registered with the New York State Department of Education:
 

  • Master of Arts (Theological Studies)

  • Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies

  • Master of Divinity

 

Degree programs prepare women and men for a variety of careers, including lay and ordained ministries, teaching, and the permanent diaconate. A full slate of courses (not exceeding a total of 15 per year) with the exception the Graduate Colloquium is also offered at our extension site in Albany.

Certification Program:

Students at St. Bernard’s Rochester location may pursue the non-degree Certification Program. This program provides an opportunity for students to explore the important issues of the Church today and to develop practical skills needed to effectively minister in important parish positions and ministries.

Students can enroll in one of three courses of study:

 

Basic Theological Study

Parish Business Management

Faith Formation 

 

Certification includes both Foundational level and Skill level courses.

         

         Theological Foundation level courses will be offered throughout the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.  They include:

                C17          Church and Sacraments

 

         Skill level courses for those in the Parish Business Management program will be held at St. Bernard’s.  Registrations will take place through St. Bernard’s website. For the full curriculum please see the Certification Course Requirements [PDF].

 

There are two skill level track options for those in the Faith Formation program:

 

Catechetical Level 1  Administrator - Assists a competent Director (Catechetical Leader II or III) or the Pastor/Pastoral Administrator in administering the parish catechetical program, supports volunteer catechists, and provides clerical and record keeping assistance.

 

Catechetical Level 2 – Coordinator - Coordinates a specific area of formation for the parish, typically programs for children/families and parents, programs for adolescents, particular sacramental catechesis programs, or programs for adults.

 

Registration: Registration for all courses will continue to take place on the St. Bernard’s website.  All courses will take place at St. Bernard’s except the Faith Formation skills courses, which will take place at the Pastoral Center’s Bishop Hickey Conference Center on Buffalo Road. Videoconferencing will continue to be offered as the sites are available.

 

Cost: There is a $20 matriculation fee for all students entering the program.  Certification courses are offered at $10 per hour.  Payment is expected for courses at the time of registration.  The total cost of each program is as follows:

o   50 hours of Certificate in Basic Theological Study costs $500

o   50 hours of Parish Business Management costs $500

o   80 hours of Certificate in Faith Formation Catechetical Level 1 costs $800

o   100 hours of Certificate in Faith Formation Catechetical Level 2 is $1,000

 

Matriculation: Matriculate into a certificate program by downloading the Certification Program Application [PDF].  Return the completed forms to Christina Schmidt, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid along with a payment of $20 made out to St. Bernard's.

Continuing Education and Special Programming:

St. Bernard's continuing education offerings are designed to meet the needs of diocesan and parish staffs as well as ministers wishing to brush up on personal and professional skills. The Preaching Institute  offers opportunities to develop preaching skills through a variety of workshops and convocations. Other special events and guest speakers are hosted by The Brennan Goldman Institute, the Dioceses of Rochester and Albany and other community organizations.

Permanent Diaconate

Working with the Diocese of Rochester, St. Bernard's offers a four-year formation program for men studying for the permanent diaconate.  The formation program consists of courses in scripture, theology and pastoral studies, spiritual and formational experiences, and field education.
