A 10 Introduction to Scripture

This course is designed to acquaint the novice student with the variety of methods used to interpret the Scriptures within the wider Church community today.  We will examine how the Church has understood the Bible throughout history.  We will also examine the question of literal and fundamental interpretations of Scripture, as well as the concepts of inerrancy and divine inspiration.

A 11  Introduction to The Old Testament

This course will examine the distinctive nature and composition of the Old Testament and its relationship to the Church today. We will look at the overall composition of the three major sections of the Old Testament as they impact the history of Israel. A survey of the major themes of the Old Testament will also be included: Election, Law, Covenant, Prophecy, Kingship and Messianism.

*B29 Pastoral Issues in Catechetical Leadership

In Faith Formation ministry a variety of pastoral issues may surface.  These critical moments can enliven or debilitate those who serve, as well as those who are served.  This course looks at the most routine issues that affect the life and health of both the catechetical leader, as well as faith formation programs and the people we serve in our parishes today. The first session will discuss the use of technology for the course.

E 10 Orientation to Ministry

Ministry is the public activity of a baptizer follower of Jesus on behalf of a specific Christian community to witness, serve and realize the Kingdom.  This course will explore the origins and development of Christian ministry as it impacts the Church today.  This course is designed for those who have no formal theological training and is required for everyone enrolled in the Certificate Program.

E 24 Introduction to Pastoral Skills

Pastoral Ministers are often called upon to become reflective listeners for the people they serve.  This course introduces the student to the basic skills of pastoral listening and other associated skills needed by today’s parish minister and grounds those skills in the broader context of pastoral care.

E 26 Visitation and Pastoral Care

This course will look at what pastoral care is and how we can become better caregivers.  Focus will be on learning and improving pastoral care skills for specific pastoral situations.  Paticular attention will be given to visiting the sick, the homebound, people in nursing homes, people with dementia and people with chronic illnesses.

* E 43 Principles of Youth Ministry II

Designed to complement Principles of Youth Ministry I (offered during the Fall semester), this course further develops the basic principles that underlie a comprehensive Parish Youth Ministry program in today’s Church. Through class interaction and participation we will explore the dynamics of adolescent faith development and appropriate youth programming.  While this is a continuation of the Fall course, new students are also most welcome this semester.

* E 55  Prayer and Liturgical Leadership

Prayer is the expression and the longing of the human heart to meet the living God. We pray as individuals and as communities gathered in faith. As a group gathers for prayer there is a need for someone to lead the assembly as it seeks to encounter the divine. This course is both theoretical and practical. It will introduce the student to the dynamics of communal (or liturgical prayer) as well as provide practical guidelines on liturgical leadership. This course is required for those seeking a Certificate in Catechetical Leadership and Pastoral Ministry.

* E 81 Parish Benefit Administration

Designed for those seeking the Certificate as Parish Business Manager, this course focuses on the complex structures of Human Resource administration both within the parish and the Diocese of Rochester.  In particular, this course places a special emphasis on the delivery of salary and benefits within Catholic parishes today, as they seek to comply with the complexities of Federal and New York State regulations.

E 87 Financial Operations I 

This is the first in an ongoing series of courses for those seeking a Certificate as Parish Business Manager.  This course familiarizes the student with the standardized financial practices used throughout the Diocese of Rochester, with an emphasis on the parish accounting practices, IRS regulations, and Diocesan reporting requirements.  Students who may have already completed Financial Operations II or III will still need to enroll in this course if they have not previously done so.

F1 Theological Reflection

This course is designed for those certificate candidates who anticipate completion of their course of studies and graduation in May. It brings methods of assessment, social analysis, and theological reflection to bear on the very real and specific problems that are experienced by those engaged in ministry today. Developed as a capstone exercise, this course focuses and refines the many and varied skills that a student has acquired through specific course work in the Certificate Program.
