2011 Commencement Ceremony May 13th

St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry will celebrate 2011commencement at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, May 13th 4:30 p.m. Commencement speaker will be Mary Louise Mitchell, SSJ, Ph.D., R.N.

Degrees will be granted to 23 candidates from St. Bernard’s Rochester and Albany programs, who have completed their study for the Master of Divinity (7), Master of Arts (Theological Studies) (6), Master of Arts, Pastoral Studies (8), Graduate Certificate in Pastoral Studies (2).   In addition, 10 individuals will be receiving Certificates marking their successful completion of the Certificate Program. Many of these men and women are already leaders in both Rochester and Albany Dioceses, working in positions as diverse as parish life director, hospital chaplain, and youth ministers.

Dr. Mary L. Mitchell is the Congregational President for Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Rochester (1993) and completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Stress and Coping with Physical Illness in 1993. Dr. Mitchell is involved in many community service projects throughout our community and is sought after as an inspirational speaker.

This year’s graduating class includes a husband and wife, as well as two candidates who already hold Ph.D.’s from other institutions. Jodi Schott, who is an active youth minister at Our Mother of Sorrows Church in Greece, will receive her MA (Theological Studies). Her husband, Jonathan Schott who is the co-coordinator of Adult Catechist & Family Formation at the Diocese of Rochester, will also receive a MA (Theological Studies).  

Our graduate Ph. D.’s include William Pickett, past president of St. John Fisher College, and a long-time supporter of pastoral planning at the Diocese of Rochester. Actively involved in many social justice causes, he is a member of St. Mary’s Church and a board member of Rural & Migrant Ministry. He maintains his own website and several blogs.

Julie Bablin, who also holds a Ph.D., completed her MA (Theological Studies) degree at our Albany extension site. She currently facilitates a bereavement group in her Albany parish. Julie also has seven children, one of whom was born during her studies at St. Bernard’s – on St. Joseph’s day!
